Fashion is everywhere whether you want to be part of it or not. Everyone is a part of it: we are all of the buyers group and the way we dress are part of the fashion industry also. Although we are all part of it, some are more passionate about fashion and they can make their dream come true by making a career out of what they love.
Fashion stylist is someone who coordinate outfits from an range of clothing and accessories. It can be for mannequins for retail stores or on live models for photo shoots. Some are assisting at styling celebrities or other famous people for different events. Some other wardrobe stylists select clothes for television, music videos, concert performances, and other public appearances.
Fashion industry is fast-paced and they have to keep up with the changing fashion trends. Stylists have to travel for fashion week at times to get garments from designers. Some may need to put extra hours to meet deadlines. Stylists are part of a larger creative team assembled by a client, collaborating with the designer, photographer, hair stylist, and make-up artist.
The common requirement is to have an associate’s degree, but experience in retail fashion and having a portfolio are also necessary. Some employers prefer individuals with bachelor’s degrees. Most of the degrees are from fashion merchandising and the years of experience of personal or on-set fashion styling are at least 4 years.
Other skills are visual accuracy, creativity, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, time management, problem-solving ability, and have good spoken and written communication. With the world being digital, knowing how to use Microsoft Office or any equivalent to it will be useful.
Stylist are the ones who put celebrities on the best-dressed list. A few of the most famous stylists are Monica Rose who styles for the Kardashian and Jenner sisters, Rachel Zoe who styles for Cameron Diaz, Demi Moore, Eva Mendes, Anne Hathaway, and Jennifer Lawrence, and Elizabeth Stewart who dress Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Jessica Chastain, and etc.
